"Ries has been an inspiring journey of discovery"
Interview by Michael Schwalb with conductor Howard Griffiths
Essay: Ries’s last journey and „The Night on Lebanon“
by Bert Hagels
In the second edition of “Über/About Ries” you will find an interview with conductor Howard Griffiths, which Michael Schwalb recorded on 1 March
2013 in Cologne. Howard Griffiths, who is currently General Music Director of the Brandenburg State Orchestra Frankfurt/Oder, was the first internationally recognised conductor of Ferdinand Ries music.
The second part of this issue discusses Ferdinand Ries’s last few years of life. While Frankfurt/Main was Ries’s permanent residence during the past ten years, he has spent extensive periods of time travelling abroad, occasionally with his family, and occasionally alone. His last travels in 1836-37 brought him to London and Paris.
